Positives in this new world?

We currently appear, at the time of writing, to be little nearer to a workable solution to this troublesome virus.

As we reflect on how the world is changing, however, we have come to appreciate a couple of things that we at BackPain.online believe will fundamentally benefit medicine for the future.

Forcing a change

Firstly, the NHS and its GP surgeries have had to radically change many of their working practices. In their attempts to catch up on the backlog, as well as coping with new patient presentations in safe environments, they have had to dramatically adapt their services.

Primarily this has necessitated the promotion of non-face to face consultations as well as the deployment of various forms of vetting procedure, trying to establish what is urgent and what isn’t. Over the last nine months, I’m sure many of you will have experienced both the good and the bad aspects of these approaches.

What I can be confident on is that if we want the NHS to continue, it has to be on a fluid basis. To make even some of these changes made recently would have normally taken twenty or thirty years.

The Covid-19 period has forced many changes on us all, none more than in Medicine.

It’s not happening, it’s happened.

Taking responsibility

The second benefit is that of individuals taking responsibility.

A common frustration in a clinic environment is that advice and instructions are given but often ignored. The patient sometimes feels ‘getting better’ is the sole responsibility of the practitioner.

This seems unfair to those of us who work in clinic, as after that 30-minute consultation, the patient has a further 6 days, 23 hours and 30 minutes of their week during which they are on their own.

We truly believe COVID has changed people’s opinion on taking back personal control. The washing of hands, wearing of masks and social distancing, although inconvenient initially, is now part of our daily routine. It’s amazing what you can get used to!

BackPain.online suits this new world

We created BackPain.online before COVID surfaced with half an eye on both these concepts.

Honestly, face to face consultations are not essential.
Gleaning accurate information on someone’s symptoms and understanding their history, is.

We are also totally on board with personal responsibility.

After all, BackPain.online gives the back pain sufferer a diagnosis explaining their personal injury, advice on what to do and what not to do, as well a rehab programme to aid their recovery.

Similar to the current COVID protocols, it is then down to the individual to carry them out.

Go on, help yourself.
